My Biography

Hey! My name is Divesh and I’ve been studying in this uni since April 2022. I’m turning 17 this year and am originally from Terengganu. I am in my 2nd year of my degree in Mechanical engineering under high achiever’s scholarship, and I’m hoping to pursue a master’s related to Physics abroad. You could probably find me hanging about in sc5, or in the library. Pretty sure I’m happy café’s favourite student, don’t know how much of a flex that is though. During long term breaks, I would go back to my old school and teach there for free and take part in multiple events involved in giving back to the community with NGOs (Lion’s Club, SSE).

My Manifesto

Vision:

To establish an inclusive, dynamic sports culture at HWUM that empowers athletes, fosters leadership, and uses sports to make a positive impact on the community, with a populist approach.

Key Initiatives:

  1. Charity Through Sports – Ensure clubs organize an event that uses sports as a platform to support the less fortunate.

  2. Athlete & Sports Leadership Development – Provide training sessions with experienced coaches and sports management workshops to develop student-athletes and club leaders, whether online or in person. Workshops on event applications will also be helpful as it is a common criterion looked for by clubs that is currently lacking. Furthermore, I aim to build stronger connections between clubs, coaches, and scouts through regular training sessions and scouting opportunities.

  3. Recognition for Student Leaders – Ensure major student-led sports events get promoted through HWUM’s main Instagram page to highlight their contributions, and club of the month appreciation.

  4. Revamp HWUMCUP – Ensure that the consistent issues of HWUMCUP are fixed, through my experience as HWUMCUP Officer and fresh ideas. A fun league would be put to run alongside HWUMCUP, without the competitive edge and making it inclusive to all students.

  5. Sports Buddy System – Pair newcomers with experienced athletes through a mentorship system to help them integrate into clubs and build confidence in sports participation.

What motivated me to nominate myself?

I’m running for VP of Sports because I am driven to solve the issues faced by clubs and students alike, while also showering the respect and recognition of my friends, peers, and clubs that are clearly deserving of. For a university of such prestige, I feel that the sports culture should match it and has the potential to be much more. My peers are so talented, and to welcome more students, appreciate current ones, develop future leaders, and lead with a populist hand is what I would like to call my success.

My top three priorities

  1. To check the feasibility of upgrades to current sports facilities/equipment based on student voice, and to bring about fresh ideas to solve issues.

  2. A sports community, where students have access to all club group chats. This makes it easier to join clubs of a student’s interest and reduced confusion, while ensuring less competition between clubs if they are all aligned.

  3. I will implement a query board in sc5, where students are allowed to ask questions or give productive ideas and complaints that I will take as feedback. Through mutual respect, all ideas and questions will be given with seriousness and will be answered or treated with respect and transparency.

What would I bring to the role?

  1. I bring forward the experience as the HWUMCUP Officer and in the sports department. Though a short stent in hindsight, I managed to host 2 big events and got a very good understanding of how HWUMCUP works and what it means to the students. This also means that I would be the best to say where HWUMCUP fell short. Furthermore, I also understand issues that students face in other sectors, such as with clubs and event applications, or with communications between peers. I am willing to address the issues and to not erase it but overcome it.

  2. I have a decent to good relationship with most influential groups within the university. I feel as with authorities; it is easier to build relationships if the person in power has the initiative to. These relationships are important, as they allow me to fully grasp and understand what the issues are, without worrying about it coming off as criticism or unconstructive as I can easily ask for further clarification. As the VP of sports, I am the bridge between the students and the university, and it is my duty to effectively relay information with transparency and accountability, ensuring that everyone feels heard and respected.

  3. I bring a “hype” sense, where my enthusiasm is contagious and influences everyone to work harder. This won’t only apply to my officers, but as well the clubs and other students. Morale is just as important as competency, and anything is accomplishable with a good spirit and drive. I will continue to show this high-spirited version to all my peers, encouraging them to work harder and to believe. I am approachable and down to earth, making it easy for students to voice feedback, provide ideas and concerns.

  4. I am proactive in the sense that I strive to help wherever I can. Whether it’s with ensuring an event runs smoothly, encouraging people for good ideas and initiatives, clearing up simple doubts, or even responding to a message, I will be there for everyone even when I can’t. I have a drive of giving back to those around me, built from appreciation to the university.

  5. I encourage participation from the student body, promoting inclusivity and the mindset of being open to new things. Though overwhelming at first, an open-minded thinking to new experiences would ensure that students keep on coming with innovative ideas, and they’re skill set will be more generalised. I am very open-minded and is commonly trying new things that pique my interest, ensuring I also make connections and fun memories throughout the event. The inclusivity includes either professional development workshops or just simply get togethers or fun games.
